Unless you plan on having lots of kids or starring in a TLC show, you’re probably not going to have many opportunities to create nurseries. On the other hand, you will be spending a lot of time in your newborn’s room, so you might as well decorate it to your heart’s desire!
Since I’m a big fan of unique, handmade, and vintage items, I went to Etsy for some inspiration. Generally speaking, whenever I visit Etsy’s site, I’m on it for a minimum of two hours, so I tend to get a bit carried away. I decided to narrow down my suggestions to three different themes to keep it a bit more organized and easier to read. Most of the items below are very customizable, so if you don’t like a certain color or feature, you can usually speak directly with the seller to change it.
Just a heads up–if you’re reading this in public, prepare to “aww” at your screen and get a few strange looks. It’s worth it, I promise.
Nautical Nursery Theme
You can’t have a nautical nursery without anchors! Since “the ship” (the crib) will likely be the first thing that captures your eye once you enter the room, you’ll probably want to decorate it with this classic design. Available in a variety of colors, you can choose whichever one matches your nursery the best. Let’s just hope that the captain sleeps soundly.
Some parents use mobiles with fluffy bunnies and stars, but you don’t have to be “anchored” (see what I did there?) to the ordinary. This ship mobile is for a child who seeks adventure, curiosity, and innovation. It’s one of the most intricate and unique mobiles I’ve seen yet.
This print is like a metaphor for your baby–sometimes irritable, but always adorable. At the same time, your baby isn’t the only one who’s going to be crabby. After three nights in a row with virtually no sleep, you might find yourself feeling overwhelmed and stressed out. Just remember–eventually your child will go back to sleep…and that means it’s your turn next!
If you’re going to incorporate a lighthouse with your nautical theme, it might as well actually light up! This LED nightlight has a sensor, so it’s good for the planet, your electric bill, and your safety.
Owl Nursery Theme
Sometimes parents get so excited about creating a nursery that they don’t think about the future of the child’s bedroom. In the picture above, you’ll notice that most of the room is neither age nor gender specific. As your baby grows up, a room like this can easily be decorated and changed around depending on your child’s interests. Removable decals are the perfect way to do this, as they add personality to an otherwise plain room. The one pictured above is sold by Run Wild Vinyl Designs. The seller has a lot of positive feedback, with nearly 500 5-star reviews!
When you first walk into a nursery, the crib is usually the first thing that you notice, but the mobiles are often the most adorable part (besides your child, of course!). One of my favorite Etsy shops that sells mobiles is Lovefelt Creations. The seller is a mom herself, and she puts so much care into every single item that she sells. As the store name suggests, the mobiles are made out of felt. Each plush element is lightly filled with hypoallergenic polyester stuffing and is entirely hand-sewn. You can choose any color that you’d like in her designs, but if you can’t decide, she’s also willing to help you pick something out to match your specific nursery.
All you need is love. And a crib. And a changing table. And a bib. And diapers. And…oh, okay. Let’s not get too literal here. This nightlight will serve its purpose by making sure you don’t trip over anything in the middle of the night (or worse–wake your baby!).
Gender-Neutral Nursery Theme
Is your new baby going to have an older brother or sister? You won’t want to leave the older child out, so why not get him or her a nice rocking chair to enjoy while you’re in the nursery? This lightweight chair can be assembled in under a minute, and it’s decorated with vibrant, nontoxic permanent inks.
Do you want to guarantee that you won’t wake up the baby? Well, I’m sorry, but you can’t. On the bright side, you can prevent the door from slamming! These door silencers are 4.5″ x 2.5″ and have durable elastic to stretch to accommodate standard doors with ease.
You don’t have to hire a professional painter to decorate your nursery. The right wall decal set can fill an entire room, and you can easily swap them out whenever you want a fresh new look!
Please note that availability for these items may change over time because they are generally handmade with care by the sellers.
